How Diet Can Affect Sensitive Skin

Sensitive skin reactions can be triggered by an array of different factors, with one of the most important ones being your diet. While there are certain foods that will help to protect sensitive skin and keep it healthy, there are also others that can significantly impact your skin in a negative way. Gluten, a protein that is present in grains, is a common cause of sensitive skin reactions, and one that many people do not realize that they are reacting to. Gluten creates cracks in the lining of the gut, which causes toxins to re-enter into the bloodstream. There have been many studies showing a strong correlation between skin health and the health of the gut, and, the best way to find out whether gluten has been affecting your sensitive skin is to completely cut it out of your diet for two to three weeks. This would mean avoiding wheat bread, soy sauce, ketchup, beer and ice cream, amongst many others. OROGOLD also recommends checking the ingredients of any cosmetic products you own, as gluten is also commonly added to those as well.

Milk Proteins
Whey and casein are both proteins found in milk, and can significantly aggravate sensitive skin, especially for those that suffer from eczema. OROGOLD recommends avoiding dairy products for a couple of weeks, to see if your sensitivities subside. There are plenty of dairy alternatives available, either made from nuts or from soy.

Egg whites in particular can often trigger skin rashes, as the human body can sometimes view the egg whites as a dangerous invader. If you have noticed rashes or hives developing a few hours after you have eaten eggs or an egg product, it would be best to cut eggs out of your diet.

Dark Green and Orange Fruit and Veg
A well-balanced diet is always going to be best for your sensitive skin, but, in particular, try to increase your intake of fruit and vegetables that are dark green and orange in color. This is because these foods contain carotenoids, which act as an antioxidant to protect your skin from being damaged by free radicals. They also contain plenty of vitamin C, which helps with the formation of collagen, the protein that keeps your skin firm and supple.

Working out whether certain foods are causing your sensitive skin to react can significantly help to decrease future sensitive skin problems. In addition to having a balanced diet, it is also hugely important to keep your body hydrated by drinking plenty of water, as sensitive skin needs as much moisture as possible to keep itself healthy. Six to eight glasses a day is the recommended amount, although fruit and herbal teas also count towards this amount. As frustrating as sensitive skin can be, a slight adjustment of your diet could be all that you need to make your skin much more easily manageable.
